The Backpacks for Foster Children project was back this year and very successful, providing back-to-school backpacks and supplies for about 200 children and youth served by the county’s foster care system.
This is the second year for project, a partnership between Child Welfare Services (CWS) and the sponsoring organizations Womens Community Business Network and Infinite Love Ministries, who in turn work with other businesses, no-profits, and individuals who want to help.

CWS divided the backpacks between the Santa Maria, Lompoc, and Santa Barbara regions. Most went to schoolchildren; some went to foster youth heading off for college. There are still some backpacks and supplies available for social workers with foster youth in need.
After the donations were delivered, CWS provided the contributing organizations, 12 in all, with Certificates of Appreciation at a luncheon held on September 11, 2012 at the Marmalade Café. (Pictures and video are available at http://www.facebook.com/WCBusinessNetwork).
CWS social worker Christel Barros has taken the lead on this valuable project since its inception. Next year, social worker Aranza Blanco has agreed to head up the CWS end of the project.
