The public is invited to attend a free kick-off event for Food Day — a celebration to promote healthy food for all. The event takes place at the Back Door Deli, 315 Camino Del Remedio in Santa Barbara, from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday, October 24.
The celebration will feature local growers, cooking and gardening demonstrations, raffle prizes, a Zumba for preschoolers exercise demonstration, and activities that inspire people to “eat real”. Food Day celebration guests will have a chance to “ask a registered dietician” questions about health and nutrition, and sample healthy foods. Guests will also be able to learn about and sign up for CalFresh—a program that helps low-income people afford food.
The fourth annual Food
Day will see events in all 50 states aimed at promoting real and just food for
all. Locally, Santa Barbara County residents join together on Food Day to:
- Promote safer healthier diets
- Work towards an end to hunger in our community
- Support nutrition education to help students make healthy, informed choices
- Advocate for fair conditions for farm and food workers
- Support sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship
Organizations present at the event will include the Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services, which administers CalFresh locally; as well as Foodbank Santa Barbara County, Fairview Gardens, Community Action Commission (CAC) Head Start, Network for a Healthy California, and the Santa Barbara Food Alliance.
Santa Barbara’s Food Day celebration is jointly sponsored by CAC and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal has sponsored a resolution declaring October 24 Food Day. Dr. Takashi Wada, Public Health Department Director, will deliver opening remarks at noon at the kick-off celebration. All proceeds from CAC’s Back Door Deli support CAC’s Healthy Senior Lunch program, providing healthy meals to over 600 low-income and homebound seniors throughout Santa Barbara County each day.
